New Beginnings

School recently began here, like everywhere in the country, and three of my grandchildren got on the big yellow bus.  They were excited, looking forward to seeing new friends, and for one of them, it was just the beginning of his school experience.  I'm sure they were feeling lots of emotions on that drive to school.

Beginnings can be exciting, but they carry some apprehension, and even fear.  Dealing with unknown circumstances, mixing hope with doubt, can lead to anxiety and uncertainty. Physical challenges can complicate moving forward, and turn simple acts into difficult ones. (Can I haul those heavy boxes?) Will you be assimilated into the group, or will you step on toes, be isolated and excluded?  Those kind of thoughts run through the mind.  Doing something new has its challenges.

I'll be joining another gallery next week.  I'm excited about the possibilities I'll have before me.  But I'm also apprehensive.  I think my work is a good fit for what they are doing there, and it is a step to a larger stage for me.  I'm uncertain about the many unwritten rules there are bound to be when people interact - I'll be the new kid on the block and I can be awkward.  But you know what?  I have faith in my work, and I believe in my skills.  I'm friendly, teachable, and will make efforts to be part of the group. I want to be successful, but I don't necessarily want to be the only one.  If I can bring anything to the table to help the gallery, I will.  We are on the same team.

Change can bring good things, and it can challenge us to think outside our comfortable little boxes.  This is a good change for me. One of many to come. As my beloved Captain Kirk would say, "Boldly go!"
