Miles to Go Before I Sleep

It's a chilly day in Atlanta, and we have snow falling, something that just isn't a normal thing here EVER. A great day to stay home and be warm and sheltered, watching the landscape fill with snow. Holidays are around the corner, and soon the new year will begin. Wrapping up this year, it has been a real year of change. I retired from my educational career, and found out retirement is not such a bad deal! I have really slowed down, taking my time to do things I enjoy. I read a lot now -- at the moment, it is "Fingerprints of the Gods" by Graham Hancock. I rest when I want to, stay up late when I please, and generally take one day at a time.
What about my art? I continue to be very selective in my art endeavors...working on commissions as they come, studying techniques, and mostly letting my art knowledge sort itself out. I resist the impulse to run after every possible opportunity. It is a season of waiting. I promised myself that I would wait to be led. So I am doing that. Waiting.
It is a good time to organize the studio, inventory supplies, and collect ideas and studies for larger works. It is a time of quiet solitude. Over the past thirty years of creating, I have never had the luxury of reflection like this. As my thoughts sort through my possibilities, I feel that I am on the verge of something exciting. The anticipation I feel for that creating time is growing. It is out there, a light in the artistic distance, and soon I'll be there. What I will find is still a mystery, but it is there.
The snow continues to fall, soft, quiet, and the air is still. Night is closing in. Time to pick up my book, and pull up the blanket. As Robert Frost said, "the woods are lovely, dark and deep", and my art journey remains, with "miles to go before I sleep."
