In The Garden - Contemplation 1987
In The Garden - Contemplation 1987

Over thirty years have passed since my first formal art class.  I've learned a lot since that first anxious, uneasy day of instruction.  Thankfully I met a wonderful mentor who taught me all he knew about art.  I learned how to "see" as an artist, experienced many media from oils to scratchboard, watercolor, acrylic, you name it.  I learned to draw figures from life.  I met some of the finest quality people I could ever meet, who shared my passion for creativity.

One of those early days, our teacher took us to a nearby field next to an old mill, where we all set up to paint plein air.  It was autumn, with a blue sky the shade of sapphires.  The golden grass surrounding us moved like waves in the light breeze.  I  had cooked some fried chicken, a friend brought fresh bread and cheese, another brought fruit, and of course, someone brought a bit of wine to share.  Music from a tape deck played Mozart as a background.  The painting, the laughter, the LIFE in that single day is something I will always remember.

As the years went by, I continued to learn in many ways, attending a few workshops, consistent painting, teaching myself to throw clay,  and assembling stained glass pieces.  Indulging my thirst for learning, I spent hours researching.  I've made some beautiful designer jewelry, and now I'm teaching myself to create using hot wax and torches!  I found commercial success, and know that my work hangs in the fine homes and businesses of many. It has been quite the ride!

The rickety art center  where I began this journey has relocated and been transformed into a gorgeous community center.  The classes are still going on, with new teachers and learners, and it is a popular event center.  A few months ago,  I was approached to exhibit in a solo show there.  Next week, I'll hang forty pieces of art, including one of my very earliest oil works, created at the original center.  When I look at the many pieces of art that will be displayed, I have a deep satisfaction in knowing that it all started there.  I found my calling there.  Now I'm coming home.

How beautiful, Karen. I remember that painting...and so many that hung and still hang in my home. It's been an incredible experience for your friends and family to watch you grow as an artist and to see the beauty you display of this gorgeous world. You bring the glorious outside into our homes.

What a gift you have that you've honored and nurtured.

And your poetry...I remember your poem about the old school gym and still love that poem. One day, you need to put your poems in a volume as well.

Much love and congratulations...on coming home.
